Normalz Interview (South Australian Producer)

Hey all, got an interstate on for you all this time (Normalz has made a bit of noise to me so I figured you guys should hear him to). He is a beat maker/producer from South Australia and is coming out with some really hot beats lately.

Normalz Interview

How long have you been making music for?
I have been making beats for 13 years. The first 4 years I was not very serious about it. It was just 1 program (Acid) I would muck around with between beatboxing and working.

Who have you worked with in the Perth Hip Hop scene?
I have done Mastering for Dismay, A collab beat with Seige-A and thats all i can think of from out that way.

Who are your favourite artists from our way?
Definately Schroomz his beats are dope. Too many Mcs and groups to really mention. I am always checking everyones music. I don't often listen to a single group or artist for very long at one time so constantly mixing up what i am listening to.

What is the Hip Hop scene like out in South Australia?
The scene here is good, lots of people putting the work in so thats good to see. I think we have so many dope producers dropping fire in S.A Lots of known and unknown people with dope beats.
My scene is always good because I just surround myself with music and like minded people who live for the music. Like any scene we have things happen for good and bad, hate and love, wack and dope, some sick cunts and some fuckwits.

Who are should we check out from out your way?
Check the people I roll with I'm a big fan of my mates Producing it all up it grows on me inevitably. Clockwork Engine fam; Ansestors of the underground, Forcefed, RwK, Swincorp, Cranx1, Mickee Juce.
There is alot of different styles of hiphop in Adelaide it's pretty diverse with its sound. Prime, Purpose, Mannaz, Trips, Delta, Funkoars, Hilltops and everyone else. There is dope hiphop here for all different tastes.

What do you use to make beats?
Adobe Audition, Flstudio, Reaper, Waves 7 bundle, Korg Padkontrol, About 700 billion plug-ins/VST instruments and i will sometimes get out the Shure7b mic to record some Instruments when i can.

What is your favourite software?
I love Flstudio. People have had a problem with it but i think that's fading away. Since around 4 versions ago Image-Line has made FL a powerhouse capable of doing any task I can think of. It used to feel limited, too structured and easy. People felt it made beats that sounded like they had been made with a kids toy pretty much. Once you start using the Fx rack, Not quantising, Pads and keys for triggers then you really have all you need. They now revolve it around Wav file looking channels you can slice up and move etc... in a more Cubase / Protools feeling way.

What is your opinion on sampling?
I love a fat dirty vinyl sample or real instruments anyday of the week. I am not a producer that agrees with vinyl and nothing else like some do. I don't want to limit myself and the technology is there to embrace. I do avoid sampling a youtube video or mp3s of any sort if i can help it. They are really only worthy for a quick vocal sample you might be looking for or something. They are too degraded and have a pretty thin sound when compared to other sources. I like to record from Movies alot and adding things that are around me like maybe my kids toy that makes cool noises or some sounds from a computer game i have been playing lately. Doing things like that stops it getting too boring or repetitive in my opinion and its heaps of fun.

What makes a quality beat to you?
I like a full sound with good bass and drums. Snares have to not hurt my ears at loud volumes.
Grimey dark shit, boom bap or ambient weird underground is all dope to me. There is some real bad stuff out there with bad mastering but i still think some of that is dope too just because the sample chops are so crazy or even something as simple as a dope snare will make me feel a beat. I like different stuff depending on my mood. There's not much i don't like. I am not a big fan of the gangsta sounding synths with a clap for the snare drum styles.

Who or what are your influences to make music?
I just enjoy it so much i can't get it out of my head. If i am not making a beat I am beatboxing it or planning something about music in my thoughts. My influences would be my mates, El-p, RJD2, J-Dilla, Al'Tarba, Premo, Shadow, Qbert, Cunninlynguist, Ant, Dubstep, the list would go forever.

Where do you see Australian Hip Hop in 5 years?
In my basement.
