Hey all, Perth Underground at the website level will cease to be updated with news from Perth Hip Hop. If you would like to keep up with the general local scene I suggest you subscribe to our frequently updated Facebook page.
I will continue to update this site with Perth Underground related news. Perth Underground will be shifting focus to music production and distribution (sort of like a record label).
This is not the end of Perth Underground at all so don't worry, the previous content will still be available and I will continue to post music and information for Perth Underground Artists.

Album Credits - Part 2 - Mobb Deep - The Infamous...
Hey all, so a few days back I did a small analysis of the credits in MMLP and now I am back with part 2. This time around I will be covering Mobb Deep's classic The Infamous... (again chosen at random out of my collection).
Mobb Deep - The Infamous...
The credits in this album are laid out as follows (I am going to just list them properly as I can't be bothered thinking of random names again).
Eye For A Eye (Your Beef Is Mines) 4:54
(A. Johnson/K. Muchita/N. Jones/ C. Woods)
produced by Mobb Deep
Featuring Nas and Raekwon The Chef
recorded by Tim Latham at Platinum Island Studios, NYC
mixed by Mobb Deep and Tony Smalios at Unique Recording Studios, NYC
Careers-BMG Music Publishing Inc./Albert Johnson/Ramecca
Music, administered by Careers-BMG Music Publishing Inc.
(BMI)/BMG Songs, Inc./Juvenile Hell Publishing, administered
by BMG Songs, Inc./Zomba Music Publishing (ASCAP)
Again this is the way it is unless one of the roles is different or not required. It seems that they weren't as anal retentive as me when it comes to capital letters but the font they used is all caps anyway (capital letters are just larger than the smaller ones). The credits in this album get the point across and don't seem too fussed about grammar. So it seems I am incorrect once again :D. I am getting the idea that it doesn't matter so much as long as the credits are consistent with the rest of the album.

Album Credits: Part 1
Hey all, for some of you that may have seen there was a bit of a discussion on album credits and roles of beat makers, song writers, session musicians and producers. Instead of beating a dead horse and debating a topic where everybody is correct I thought I would pick out 5 albums at random from my collection and have a look at how they have set out their album credits. It was my opinion that the beat maker does not always necessarily have to be credited as a producer but others may not agree with me.
Instead of doing all 5 albums at once (which I stated yesterday) I will do one at a time due to having to do actual work at my job (I know right?!).
Song Name
(D.A Rapper, A beatjacker, S Equencer) - writers
Produced by: A Producer
Mixed by: T.A Engineer
Recording and Mix Engineer: M Assistant
Bass: U Bassplayer
Guitar: M Strummer
Keyboards: I.M Creative
Assistant Engineer: D.A Biatch
Published by: Music Label
All songs are laid out like this unless one of the roles is not filled.
In the MMLP my idea of how an album should be credited is wrong (although I don't know exactly how this album was recorded and produced so I could be right). In this case the rapper, and beat-makers are listed as song writers and producers and the extras such as mixing and recording engineers, session musicians, assistants and publishers are also credited. The mastering engineer does not make an appearance here as in most cases the mastering for an entire album is done by one person (or one team).
I will continue tomorrow (hopefully) with another random album and hopefully anybody involved can gain some knowledge and release some more professional looking albums.
** Note, they used Produced by in the credits... GRRR

EMINEM - MMLP
First off, I was wrapped that this came out and I am surprised that it came out first. Dr Dre has been a massive inspiration to anything music related I have ever done and is still one of my overall favourites.
The credits in this booklet are laid out professionally in the below format.
(D.A Rapper, A beatjacker, S Equencer) - writers
Produced by: A Producer
Mixed by: T.A Engineer
Recording and Mix Engineer: M Assistant
Bass: U Bassplayer
Guitar: M Strummer

THEGNTLMN - Interview
How has the response been to your
recent releases?
Its been
interesting. I've never released anything on my own so its been a
real learning experience. Everybody that’s copped the tapes has
come back with positive feedback though so I gather Listeners are
understanding what I'm doing and feeling the new direction I've
decided to take.
Most people know who you are by now,
but why the alias?
I got tired of
being the type of producer that makes beats, puts them on the net
with a price tag, sells, and repeats process. I’m not about selling
my beats to some toys for a quick buck, I mean, I respect a dude that
can live off his music but I'm not in that head space anymore.
These days I'm all
about trying new things and growing as a producer, I want to make
music that contributes to my own catalog rather than everyone elses
and even though choosing to use an alias has definitely made it
tricky for listeners that followed me previously to continue to do
so, I feel that I've made the right decision.
What have you been working on
recently?
I've been busy
working on the first installment from a new series of tapes titled 'Cypher Sessions' that should be out for free download within
the next month or two. I have also started putting together joints
for the next Earbuds release. I'm really taking my time with it
though, I want to make sure I don’t rush it and fuck the vibe up.
Who are you favorite artists in
Perth?
Keep an ear out
for Oath's – The Sun sets in the west LP and Kid Tsunami's The
Chase LP. Both solid artists making real music!
Who are your favorite artists in
general?
Shit, Hard
question. Lately I've been getting into a lot of lesser known
artists, I prefer listening to cats working out of home studios
rather than the more established guys.
I can relate more
to artists like Onoe Caponoe, Cracker Jon, Ollie Sudds or the Shedmen
for example.... dudes making quality music for the love with limited
funds!
Favorite producers?
Rather than list
off all the classics that everybody does, Ill take this opportunity
to shine some light on some real dope underground producers that I've
been keeping an ear on lately. I urge peeps to check out StarvmentZ,
Jenova7, Illuzual, Hashfinger, Son of a bricklayer, Jae Genius,
2latethadon etc... these are all extremely talented mad cunts that
people need to know about.
What equipment do you use for beats?
A piece of hose,
Rigged up to a Gatorade bottle Rigged up to my mouth, Rigged up to my
brain.
What is your inspiration to make
music?
I'm not really
sure anymore, I'm just sorta doing what I'm doing and enjoying the
process. I used to care about status and what people thought but
these days I couldn't give a fuck. I'm just doing me and I feel my
music has finally become a reflection of this.
Is there anybody you would like to
work with in future?
Definitely, moves
are currently being made to make it happen!
Any upcoming shows or releases?
Im not planning on
doing any shows of my own any time soon, but be sure to peep out the
homies Slackjaw and KnoeFM supporting Jehst, June 30th at
the Civic Hotel. Shits gonna be ill.
Release wise, Keep
peeping my bookface and bandcamp pages for updates.
Where can we find your music?
Hopefully within
any mad cunts music collection!! Otherwise peep www.thegntlmn.com

Tera AKA Big Wil - Interview
Wat up? I got the chance to get a quick interview with Perth Hip Hop up-comer Tera AKA Big Wil. Although there is plenty of extremely talented people in the indigenous hip hop scene here at Perth Underground we believe that Tera should be nominated for a Deadly Award.
When did you first get into making hip hop music?
I can honestly say that i have only started getting into" making" hiphop music in the past 3-4 years. It was almost like a calling or a progression into something i feel i was meant to do because hiphop has been a big part of my life growing up and not just the musical side of hiphop im talking break dancing/graffitti and rhyming so a couple of years back when I saw that abmusic had a hiphop programme running as part of there studies i enrolled and after writng poetry and just straight rhymes for many years combined with a love for hiphop/rap music from the time i was about 10 years old i decided to give it a go and start to learn about all aspects of not only hiphop/rap music but all music. THen while at abmusic my cousin seeko mc and jamahl ryder and my self formed a little rap crew called OBSTRUKT and i also met fellow indigenous rapper BRYTE MC and he actually gave us the very first beat i ever rapped over and recorded to so big ups to bryte!. I also met BLACK POET while studying at abmusic and he introduced me to Andrew Wright from GOLD DUST STUDIOS and i started recording and co producing beats there. I still know very little about producing and mixing and mastering and all that good stuff but it's something i want to pursue further but for now i like just writing and getting in the studio and doing my thing and leaving the rest up to the engineers and producer although i love being apart of it especially the beat production side of things i love that.....
Who or what are your influences when it comes to music?
Some of the who's and what's that influence me when it comes to music are my children, family ,friends and even people that i don't really get along with influence me!i would have to say me i influence my music and i suppose life in general you know the ups and downs we face on our journey and the good times and bad times and even other peoples struggles and stories are very influencial to me and my music. Also there are way to many musicians to name who musically influence me but really just those artists who use there music to help others and bring positive messages and try to encourage change to our world.
What do you think of the Perth hip hop scene?
Well i havn't been in the scene for to long but from what i have seen everyone is pretty close and supports each other and i suppose that's all you could ask for.I am greatfull to the perth hiphop scene for the oppurtunities that have been offered to me as an indigenous artist.from the chance to perform and just general support from other mc's and producers and promoters. One thing i can say is that perth is full of talented hiphop artists/mc's and producers .The quality of what is coming out of perth is unbelievable and the wider australian hiphop scene should keep an eye and ear out for whats coming out of perth...
Who are your favourite hip hop artists?
Some of my favourite indigenous and oz hiphop artists are last kinnection , wire mc ,brotha black, hill top hoods, briggs , sky high, draft, daz and layla, and one of my all time favourite perth hiphop artists/crew are clandestine( i was lucky enough to help open up a show for them) also..bryte mc,FLUENT(my little cuzzin who is up and coming and tearing up every stage and every mic he spits on)..also funkoars,mr grevis...impossible odds and many many more...some of my all time favourites outside of oz would have to be the usuall suspcts being 2pac.biggie.ice cube.snoop, public enemy, run dmc, beastie boys, wutang big l,big pun and so son ...too many to name but you get the picture!
What are your thoughts on the aboriginal hip hop scene?
Well the aboriginal/indigenous hiphop scene continues to amaze me at the amount of talent that is in our country/communities its just madness there are so many talented artists all doing there thing and getting positive messages out there and really using there music to help our people and shed light on our struggle.it makes me proud to be an indigenous mc when i look at what is going on amongst our people knowing that we all love doing what we do but we are all still into our culture and are all trying to make positive change with our music while showing the rest of the country our culture, stories and dances. I know i love being involved with able to perform at survival day concerts and naidoc events and rally's and any event to do with our people its just awsome and even when im not performing i am always in the crowd with my kids to show my support and ive noticed that aboriginal hiphop is coming strong out of our capital cities aswell as from desert regions and remote communities aswell which is 2 deadly!
Have you been involved in the Deadly Awards before?
No i have never been involved in the Deadly awards so this would be the first time being nominated So a big thank you to you perth underground for the nomination and 2 everybody else that has nominated me thank you to. I have watched and followed previous deadly's and always thought it would be deadly to be apart of just seeing all my people being aknowledged for their hard work and deadly achievements it's very inspiring to me and no doubt to the rest of my people.iI hope i can be succesfull with the nominations and make it thru to the voting round then i wil be hitting everyone i know to vote for me. I am being nomnated in the category of most promising new talent to music so hopefully all goes well . Ihave no doubt there are alot of talented musicians nominated and it is going to be hard to crack into a final spot of nominees but you gota be in it to win it so lets do this!

I also recently laid some vocals on a track for dardy azz productions which is run by azriel bartlett the youngest of the mighty bartlett brothers (indigenous band) and the hook was layed down by jason bartlett(bartlett brothers band member) a former australian idol hopeful.last of all i am currently workin on something different which is a collaboration of musicians that all attended scarborough high school and some of us where even in the same classes but we all represent different genres of music so that should be pretty interesting. i have also recently been contacted by worldwidetrackpros.com and they are asking if i need new beats and they let me know they are currently working on some trax for def jam so that sounds promising to.There is lots more planned so keep an ear and eye out for ya boy TERA aka BIG WIL.
Where can we hear some of your music?

Aftershock: CREATING SILENCE
AFTERSHOCK: “CREATING SILENCE”
I’ve
been sitting here contemplating how to start this review off, as there is too
much that goes on in my confusing mind to be able to organize and lay out in an
orderly fashion my view of Aftershock’s new album, “Creating Silence.” So I’ve decided to just dribble some
shit about the album, and hopefully not flap around all over the place too
much. If you don’t know already,
Aftershock consists of 2 young and talented artists, Mysc and Blunt, 2
individuals with completely different styles of writing, microphone presence
and delivery, yet somehow they fit together like 2 peas in a pod, if one of
those peas were little, and one was a big juicy one! With cuts by a Perth favourite, Rob Shaker, and mastered by
Maali The Haunter, the album is a great added addition to my Aussie Hip Hop
collection.
The
flow of the album and track order was consistent and done well, and in general
Mysc and Blunt do a great job in allowing you to see their personalities,
thoughts, passions, attitudes, struggles – whether past or present, the pain
they’ve encountered, and their sense of humour just to name a few. Honestly, I thought
that the whole album is tight, with a little something for everyone. I got my favourites and my not so
favourites, but all in all as a whole it’s a well rounded production. Aiight, LET’S GOOOO…..
To
me one of the most important things on an album is the opening track, and as
soon as track 1 “Rebirth” kicked in while I was drivin in my pimpin’ gangsta
hard hittin Toyota Yaris, I was already anticipating the tracks there
after. With a bangin beat, that
you can’t help but break ya neck too, Mysc comes in welcoming the listener to
what’s to come before beasting the microphone. Mysc comes hard with a tough delivery, witty wordplay and
punch lines, some you might miss until you’ve listened a few times, with
quotables like “Motherf*cker I’m a rare production / I’m
not afraid of you – even though I’m scared of nothing!” When Mysc finishes his verse the cuts by
Rob Shaker are vicious, fitting perfectly, before the heavy voice of Blunt
kicks in, which at first sounds a bit off and corny, until you realise that
it’s just the way he exactly delivers most of his pieces, almost as if he has
to warm up before putting the pedal to metal as he delivers his quirky bars,
clear enunciation, and one of the few artists I’ve heard who loves to emphasise
phrases in a way to make sure you don’t miss his point, example - “It’s harder to speak after a carton of Beam
/ and flossin aint shit when you’re missin half of your teeth / fuckers you’ll
see caskets before you see me startin to beef / cuz I don’t believe in harming
the weak.” Great opener.
“No
Substitute” follows after “Rebirth” – and the beat is on some mellow Beastie
Boys lounge room shit, smooth, silky almost. Blunt starts the track off with his lazy laid back flow, while
Mysc delivers his words in a steady paced rhythm. Basically, there is no substitute for these 2 dudes!
“Here
We Come” – featuring Intelekt, Hunter (Never Forgotten) and Porsah Laine. Firstly, this track deserves nothing
but respect for one of Perth’s lost Hip Hop soldiers, Robert Hunter, nuff
said. Intelekt kicks in with the
intro, and delivers an excellent bombardment of grammatical flavour, kid got
skills, while Porsah Laine is slammin down one of her beautiful hooks, and in
between is Hunter, Blunt, and Mysc doin what they do, when they do, what they
do. Word.
“Too
Suave” and “Free Bullsh*t, P*ssy Sold Separately” give you an insight to the
comical yet twisted mind of Aftershock, as Blunt delivers some hilarious bars
and paints a funny ass picture for you in “Too Suave”, whereby taking on the
persona of Hugo Suave, the title says all, afterwards both Mysc and Blunt bring
nasty back with “Free Bullsh*t, P*ssy Sold Separately.”
“On
My Way” – Blunt possibly delivers one of his best verses of the album on this
track in my opinion, not necessarily content or wordplay, I think it’s because
Blunt let’s the dog out the cage for the first time on the album, unleashing a
faster paced flow, fitting perfectly with Mysc and both complimenting each
other.
“Silent
Surrender” to me kind of sounds like the current soundtrack to Mysc’s life,
opening up his journal of struggle -
inviting the listener to empathize with a broken heart, being the odd
one out, participating in self destructive entertainment, and simply fumbling
through obstacles which lay in his path.
An excellent track – Mysc display’s some ill internal rhyming and
wordplay!
Ok,
so, I’m in a great mood, and I’m ready for some sharp, dark, monster type of
shit when “Midnight Mindstate kicks in featuring Sever. The beat is F*CKING fantastic, and Rob
Shaker’s cuts make it even better, Blunt hauls in first, paving the way for
Sever, who, if I may note, chews the shit out of this beat with his mic
presence, swinging bars to knock anyone’s head off, followed by Mysc who puts
the cherry on the top. This is a
definite repeater, and with too many quotables to mention from all 3 artists,
I’ll just say this, “Now my pants are so baggy cuz I belt c*nts!” HA!
“Send
Me To Hell” featuring Bitter Belief.
The 3 artists put down some truth, touching on their own failures,
failed relationships, giving us a bit of the dark side of Aftershock. The only criticism I have on this track
is how it ends, it just….ends. It
kinda threw me off, but still dope none the less.
“Home
For Now” – A dope little ditty of heartfelt down to earth realism, the struggle
of finding a place to settle, physically, spiritually, mentally, whatever, almost
as if both MC’s decide to let the listener in on their own self contemplation,
from the struggle of Blunt’s mother working 2 jobs when he was 13 to pay the
rent, whereby he also helped out, to Mysc living in the back of a car for an
unknown amount of time, however both keep movin on.
Any
artist, if honest with themselves, know that any track where they decide to
really open up and let the public hear what is really inside their deepest
canyons of the soul, is somewhat scary and risky. I think “Hidden In Plain Sight” by Blunt is one of
those tracks, and it’s f*cking fantastic.
Wheeeeewwww….the track gave me the chills, and is probably one of my favourite
songs from Blunt. The picture is
clear, the struggle in keeping relations with his brother, the death of their
father, and the unconditional love Blunt has, just crazy and real. I’ll keep it at that, and thank you
Blunt for sharing, great song, mad respect.
On
a happier note, “The Silver Lining” is probably the anthem track on the album
for me, even my contemporary rock/blues and blue grass music fans of a friend
loved the song. The song will take
you back to the days of downing bags of that disgusting goon juice, the box of
Coolabah you got for 10 dollars, that you paid for with 5 and 10 cent pieces
you found on your bedroom floor, in your car, and ya mates pants pockets while
he was sleeping. You can mix it
with orange juice, pineapple juice (you know you have!), and it still taste
like shit. You wake up feeling
like a camel took a shit in your mouth and kicked you in the head while you
were sleeping, yet there’s no doubt that you will drink from the silver pillow
of madness again – “GOON BAG GOON BAG!”
The song is a crack up and you will be singin along with it regardless.
“Closed
Deal” featuring Complete – just a raw little tune where all 3 artists claim
bragging rights and Complete complete’s the song with an excellent finishing
touch – “yeah my Nike’s are bloodstained
but I bleed from the wrist” – Too late to turn back!
“Dead
Shark” is a great metaphorical rhyme about broken love, about that fish in the
sea you caught, then realized it was a “dead shark.” Mysc delivers the track solo, with a catchy hook, saying
what many of us have dealt with. “She loves me, then she loves me not – She
wants me, then she wants me gone…”
“Dope
As Fuck II” featuring Down South Crew, tear up a dope little beat that will
have you smiling, following every word from all MC’s, again with some excellent
cuts by Rob Shaker, the track is dope as fuck too….HA!
As
the album comes to a close, the ending track is “Silence of The Stands.” If you got some good subs in ya ride,
it’s well worth cranking at the lights next to that old lady who frowns at
anyone born after 1942. A well
picked finishing track, “One day one day I’ll stop sayin one day” sums up the
track for me, as both MC’s are letting us know that they owe nobody nothing,
and they will silence those who oppose or doubt their goals.
In
summary, the album is full of emotion, passion, hard work and honesty. Both Blunt and Mysc deliver powerful
verses and excellent lyricism, some tracks more than others. All the hooks to the songs fit well
with the mood of the song, pace and content. I feel a bit more attention to detail was needed in the
volume and sound levels, which were somewhat off balance on certain tracks,
however very minor but noticeable.
I will note that every artists Aftershock had featured on Creating
Silence brought their skills, not one faltered in their delivery or mic
presence, and each complimented the track they were on. I will be brutally honest and comment
on the album cover itself, and I’m just being an anal koont here, but I don’t
like it. I think a better picture,
or graphic could’ve been used. I’m
no visual artist expert, but the photo looks b-grade corny compared to what you
hear from the actual content of the album, which is dope, and unfortunately
people do “judge a book by it’s cover.”
I think the picture could’ve been on the inside of the sleeve, but not
as it’s main feature for the album.
All
in all, this album will continue to be on my play list. I believe with age and maturity, like
any skill or occupation, Mysc and Blunt will only continue to get better, fine-tuning
their styles to a point of precision, and I don’t think it’ll take very
long. Both MC’s have clever punch
lines, witty simile’s, metaphor’s and synonyms. Blunt’s laid back baritone flow and comical deliveries
combined with Mysc’s serious, energetic flow and flexible delivery, internals and
multi’s, make for a great little gem to the collection. The quality overall was done well, and Rob
Shakers cuts definitely add spice to certain tracks that may otherwise be a bit
plain in regards to music. At the
end of the day everyone who participated in this production put heart and soul
into it, a proud result for Aftershock I’m sure, dedicated to the memory of
Robert Hunter, one who will be missed in the Perth Hip Hop community. Respect.
In
case you give a shit, and for something different, my top favourite’s of the
album are:
Rebirth
Here
We Come featuring Intelekt, Hunter, and Porsah Laine
Midnight
Mindstate featuring Sever
Send
Me To Hell featuring Bitter Belief
Silence
of The Stands
Honourable

The Freakz of The Nature WA album launch – Friday 20th April 2012 @ The Railway Hotel
After years of having members based on different sides of the country, and a massive album launch in Sydney earlier this year, electro hip hoppers The Freakz of The Nature officially return to WA, and what better way to kick it off than launching their album, ‘2000Zen’. What’s even better than that? You get a copy of the album as part of the entry fee!
The launch goes down Friday 20th of April at The Railway Hotel, 44 Tydeman Rd, North Fremantle. Also performing on the night will be Trooth, Wisdom 2th plus special guest DJ LXD from Melbourne.
Doors open at 8pm, with an open mic session between 8:30pm – 9pm, for any MCs out there who wanna drop a verse, best get down there early. Entry is only $10 which as we mentioned before, includes a copy of The Freakz of The Nature’s album 2000Zen!
It’s been 1 year since The Freakz last rocked the stage in WA, and this will be the first time the 2000Zen album has been performed in full in WA. The Freakz are known for their super energetic live sets, so no matter if you are new to The Freakz, or been there since 1996, this is the show to be at.

All Ages Quadruple Album Launch (Aftershock / Omac / Defekt / Cynical World)
Here it is! The QUADRUPLE album launch! Aftershock will be releasing their long-awaited “Creating Silence”, Omac will be releasing “Show Some Nerve”, Defekt will be releasing “Detrimental” and Cyncal World will be releasing “The Cynical World EP”. Also Aero D of the Down South Crew and The 6.0 Krew will also be performing with the sound provided by none other than DJ L-Street!
This is all going down at The Swan View Youth Centre with a big help from The Seen And Heard Foundation who have been cool enough to let us rappers swear on stage, yes, there will be coarse language, no censorship like most other underage gigs!
You'll have to bring I.D. though, something with your date of birth on it, a smart rider would be perfect. There will be security who will be doing bag checks since this is a drug-free event and there is no smoking allowed at the venue itself...
There will be loads of free CD's and merchandise for sale at the show. As well as an open mic at the beginning of the show! So if you think you got some skills, DJ L-Street will be on the wheels of steel, he'll slide you up a beat and you can show us all what you've got!
I know transport has always been a hassle to organize for underage shows, so I found out the 314 bus leaves from a stop on Talbot Rd after Churchill Dr at 11:07 pm towards the Midland Train Station :)
Now, entry will be $15 on the door, but you can buy pre-sale tickets for $10 each from any of the performing artists. If you want to get in contact with any of them, all their links are listed below :)

Letters To The Sun - Appetizers
What up, first cab out of the rank for Attic Inventor. As you may know Loftee was getting a bit snowed under from the website and couldn't juggle everything he needed to do and the site at the same time. I was recommended to him by someone you all might know Pete Styla (Perth Underground reviewer) and I hope I can provide the same sort of content that Loftee did for so long. I don't quite have the smarts or the 2 and a half years under my belt running this thing but I'll do my best to bring everything here and on time.
Anyway check out this free music from Letters To The Sun (features Coin from The Stoops).
As I get to keep a little bit of my own flavour and can change up the format a little I'm getting rid of the Facebook links at the bottom of every post. If you want it YOU can find them.

Normalz Interview (South Australian Producer)
Hey all, got an interstate on for you all this time (Normalz has made a bit of noise to me so I figured you guys should hear him to). He is a beat maker/producer from South Australia and is coming out with some really hot beats lately.
What do you use to make beats?
Adobe Audition, Flstudio, Reaper, Waves 7 bundle, Korg Padkontrol, About 700 billion plug-ins/VST instruments and i will sometimes get out the Shure7b mic to record some Instruments when i can.
What is your favourite software?
I love Flstudio. People have had a problem with it but i think that's fading away. Since around 4 versions ago Image-Line has made FL a powerhouse capable of doing any task I can think of. It used to feel limited, too structured and easy. People felt it made beats that sounded like they had been made with a kids toy pretty much. Once you start using the Fx rack, Not quantising, Pads and keys for triggers then you really have all you need. They now revolve it around Wav file looking channels you can slice up and move etc... in a more Cubase / Protools feeling way.
What is your opinion on sampling?
I love a fat dirty vinyl sample or real instruments anyday of the week. I am not a producer that agrees with vinyl and nothing else like some do. I don't want to limit myself and the technology is there to embrace. I do avoid sampling a youtube video or mp3s of any sort if i can help it. They are really only worthy for a quick vocal sample you might be looking for or something. They are too degraded and have a pretty thin sound when compared to other sources. I like to record from Movies alot and adding things that are around me like maybe my kids toy that makes cool noises or some sounds from a computer game i have been playing lately. Doing things like that stops it getting too boring or repetitive in my opinion and its heaps of fun.
What makes a quality beat to you?
I like a full sound with good bass and drums. Snares have to not hurt my ears at loud volumes.
Grimey dark shit, boom bap or ambient weird underground is all dope to me. There is some real bad stuff out there with bad mastering but i still think some of that is dope too just because the sample chops are so crazy or even something as simple as a dope snare will make me feel a beat. I like different stuff depending on my mood. There's not much i don't like. I am not a big fan of the gangsta sounding synths with a clap for the snare drum styles.
Who or what are your influences to make music?
I just enjoy it so much i can't get it out of my head. If i am not making a beat I am beatboxing it or planning something about music in my thoughts. My influences would be my mates, El-p, RJD2, J-Dilla, Al'Tarba, Premo, Shadow, Qbert, Cunninlynguist, Ant, Dubstep, the list would go forever.
Where do you see Australian Hip Hop in 5 years?
In my basement.
Normalz Interview
How long have you been making music for?
I have been making beats for 13 years. The first 4 years I was not very serious about it. It was just 1 program (Acid) I would muck around with between beatboxing and working.
Who have you worked with in the Perth Hip Hop scene?
I have done Mastering for Dismay, A collab beat with Seige-A and thats all i can think of from out that way.
Who are your favourite artists from our way?
Definately Schroomz his beats are dope. Too many Mcs and groups to really mention. I am always checking everyones music. I don't often listen to a single group or artist for very long at one time so constantly mixing up what i am listening to.
What is the Hip Hop scene like out in South Australia?
The scene here is good, lots of people putting the work in so thats good to see. I think we have so many dope producers dropping fire in S.A Lots of known and unknown people with dope beats.
My scene is always good because I just surround myself with music and like minded people who live for the music. Like any scene we have things happen for good and bad, hate and love, wack and dope, some sick cunts and some fuckwits.
Who are should we check out from out your way?
Check the people I roll with I'm a big fan of my mates Producing it all up it grows on me inevitably. Clockwork Engine fam; Ansestors of the underground, Forcefed, RwK, Swincorp, Cranx1, Mickee Juce.
There is alot of different styles of hiphop in Adelaide it's pretty diverse with its sound. Prime, Purpose, Mannaz, Trips, Delta, Funkoars, Hilltops and everyone else. There is dope hiphop here for all different tastes.

So where do you get the name Mr Grevis from?
Funny u should ask... I'm in the works of making a 2 minute youtube vid explaining this! haha its not a name! its an expression i made up, the video will explain it better
You are working on an album, what is it called?
I'm working on 2 albums one of which is fully recorded and in the cuts/mixing/mastering stage now i decided to release a 10 track free album first then a full length later.
When can we expect to hear it?
The short album hopefully by april but defiantly may 25th at the very latest. The second album i already have 6 tracks written for and 3 new beats so hopefully december for that one... i have saved my good tracks for that album so hopefully people like the first album cos then they should defiantly dig the second one!
Who is involved in production for the album?
The short album, dazastah, rob shaker and paulie p. Similar for the second album but i have old beats from trials that I've written too and 3 brand new trials beats that I've half written tracks too! There probably 5 of my favourite songs I've done, and i don't say that all that often about my own music cos I'm mega self critical!
Who are you main influences when it comes to Hip Hop?
I would have to say naughty by nature cos its the first tape i ever bought and i knew something changed when i bought that tape! Still love that album! Fucken love guilty simpson he sounds so basic cos his flow just rolls but he is really intricate at the same time spits multis and u hardly notice cos he just rolls on the beat. Brother ali, eminem. As far as ozzy hip hop goes hilltops, drapht, horrowshow funk oars vents downside and i reckon pez is a fucken sick emcee too.... Not really a massive fan of staunch hip hop about shanking ppl etc, i been in alot of strife with the law over my life but i don't wanna put out a negative image and try come across like i think I'm a tough guy! I like to spit about life, relevant issues and send a positive message and make music that i myself would actually wanna hear!
What do you think of the scene in Perth?
Perth scene is fucken sick, mostly not alot of beef and everyone helps each other out etc i think we got a really good community of people that all stick together and unite in times of crisis and need.
Who are some locals we should watch out for?
I think bitter has had that underground crown locked down for quite some time now... very hardworking emcee! it shows in his tunes. My favourite emcee would be complete, dude is crazy talented if only he would just stop rapping about raping small children haha. Soma is fucken dope its like having a sick UK rapper right here in perth! Dsc boys go hard too.... There is a few young emcees and crews who I'm not massively feeling but out of the young guns i would have to say i really like what I'm hearing from Dista theres still a bit of room for improvement but that said i already dig his music and i like the direction he is going with it!
Do you have any shows coming up?
Yes i do... its bitter b's mix tape launch/birthday party at rose mount on may 25th! Headlined by seth sentry. Me and porsah laine are on the support! I will be giving away free copy of my album on the night to anyone who wants one!
Thanks for ur time and props on what u guys are doing on this page! Grevis

Adam Crook Interview
How long have you been working on your debut release 'One Of A Kind'?
Way too long!! I started putting the album together with the right idea in mind about 18 months ago.. But I first recorded way way back in '97. I didn't really get serious till about 'o3 when I met Shaker through 2 best mates, ones on the album, AMC..
What was the concept behind the album?
Something for everyone is what I aimed for. A real range of topics, themes n ideas, a journey of sorts.. Some of the tracks are five or so years old, but myself, Shaker n my boy Jed, who took charge of the track list order, agreed they still fit. Most are newish... Haha!!
It was pain staking picking the tracks. Cuttin down from forty or so songs, to an albums worth. But I hope everyone finds somethin on there they wana bump to..

Who was involved in the production on the album?
Rob Shaker, Rob Shaker & Rob Shaker.. Production on most of it, all the recording mixing mastering as well.. AMC gota a beat on there aswell
What drew you to Hip Hop?
Basketball.. Seriously, I played ball from four or five and all the NBA VHS tapes I'd get had this music I really liked n would bounce around to.. My mum ran a video store that also had CD's, so I'd find out the artist, ask mum to order the CD, then take it home n burn my favourite tracks to cassette!! Old school.. Ha. But ball n hip hop went hand in hand from then n will do so forever..
Who are some of your favourite Hip Hop artists?
Always a tough question, my mates n I used to sit around, drink, play eats and debate top five favourites.. Constantly!!! But a couple of my all time would be Big Pun, Jay, Wu, , Em, Pac, Biggie, Pharoah, R A The Rugged Man, The Roots, Outkast. Also gota love home grown Draphto, Rae, Downsyde, Hill Tops, BnE.. Dude, the list goes on and on..
What do you think about the Perth Hip Hop scene?
It's in a bigger and better place than ever now, it's awesome. I disappeared for a few years cause too many dudes had beef with eachother, always started ish, cats bombed all the venues to a point there was no where to play.. And I just wanted to play and listen to music man!!
Now venues are open to it and the scene has some what cleaned up..
There's so many cats givin their all now a days, it makes people step up their game. It's dope. There are a few people still sold on the tough guy image, when it's not needed, but it is what it is. I'm the vegetarian emcee... NO BEEF!!! haha.. But all in all there's a shit load of talent in this small city, I'm proud to be a part if it..

Who are some locals that you think we should look out for?
Alot a dudes doin great things with their tunes.. But some I gota say, Phat Flo, Rae - Speek Easy, Bitter Belief (as if ya didn't know), AMC, Defyre, Creed Birch, Soma, LSD n his lovely lady, Paulie P, Slackjaw.. Once again man, the list goes on..
Thumbs up to all doin their thing, always remember, it takes balls to stand our side of the mic, it's easy for others to talk this n that.. Just do you and let the rest fall by the wayside..
