Letters To The Sun - Appetizers

What up, first cab out of the rank for Attic Inventor. As you may know Loftee was getting a bit snowed under from the website and couldn't juggle everything he needed to do and the site at the same time. I was recommended to him by someone you all might know Pete Styla (Perth Underground reviewer) and I hope I can provide the same sort of content that Loftee did for so long. I don't quite have the smarts or the 2 and a half years under my belt running this thing but I'll do my best to bring everything here and on time.

Anyway check out this free music from Letters To The Sun (features Coin from The Stoops).

As I get to keep a little bit of my own flavour and can change up the format a little I'm getting rid of the Facebook links at the bottom of every post. If you want it YOU can find them.

Perth Underground Awards 2011

Hey all, it has come to that time of the year where the Perth Underground Awards happen. I have replaced the trophy image from the weird naked dude to something a little more seriously.

Perth Underground Awards

Top Album: Various Artists - Australian Hip Hop Supports CanTeen

Various Artists - Australian Hip Hop Supports CanTeen. Not much really needs to be said about this, to get all these artists on one compilation supporting such a noble cause it is a winner. With great quality music from such a diverse group of people I have to give it the top album award.

Top Artist: Bitter Belief

Bitter Belief tops this one as he has been around the country repping for Perth. Many will forget that he had the release of his album 'Isolation' this year and it was also a serious contender for the Top Album award. He is working on new material and is releasing a mixtape for free very shortly.

Top Track: The Stoops - Free

The Stoops - Free. This track was HUGE and got quite a bit of radio play. These guys actually challenged Drapht's views for a while so have to give them props for that.

Top Group: Soma & Shroomz

Soma & Shroomz have proven themselves to be the top group in Perth. They took out the competition to support Jedi Mind Tricks and absolutely smashed it.

Top Beat Maker: Creed Birch

Creed Birch. This guy took out Beat Down 4 and has some crazy beats. He has also donated quite a bit of money towards the making of Hunter's documentary. Providing beats for a lot of local talent at a decent rate he deserves to take this one.

Check out Creed Birch on Facebook.

Top Mixtape: Down South Crew - Ill Recognise Ill

Down South Crew - Ill Recognise Ill. This mixtape featured such a wide variety of artists in Perth and deserves the award for the top mixtape.

Top DJ: Rob Shaker

Rob Shaker gets this one as he had the oppurtunity to travel around the country and DJ for Drapht. He has filled in for many local artists, always has time for people and is willing to help out.

People's Champ: Javier Diaz

Javier Diaz works harder than anybody to put on events for the Perth Hip Hop scene. Without him a lot of these things wouldn't happen so when you get the chance buy him a beer. Rico of GGP got this last year and I didn't think it was fair to double up. He still runs Mixtape at The Newport every month and has time for nearly anybody. If you see him out buy him a beer as well. Lords.

Best Video: Big Tybes - Stoner Song

Big Tybes - The Stoner Song. It isn't often that I think a parody is better than the original but this one is an exception. Tybes killed it and this simple video suits the track. The views speak for themselves.

Best Battle: Cortext VS Azmatik

Cortext VS Azmatik was the best battle I have seen in PCB. Cortext came out on top but it was damn close.

Best Support: The New Breed

The New Breed take the award for the best support in the Perth Hip Hop scene as they put in so much effort for others. This group has been around for a little while now and has improved so much over. Next year they will be one to look out for and hopefully will be releasing some really dope material.

The Stoops - Free (Launch at The Rosemount)

Hey all, how are you going? For those that haven't heard it before Rae had an album titled "Fluke" that featured a track from The Stoops titled "Free". The track ended up featured on a Foxtel advertisement and has well you could say blown up a little bit. On Wednesday June 22nd The Stoops will be launching the track at The Rosemount Hotel in North Perth. Make sure you head down to check it out.

Releasing their latest single (Free) this weekend, (The Stoops)’s MC (Pronto) gives us the story of the single.

We (The Stoops) met Georgi Kay after performing at Last years WAM Song of The Year awards night. She approached us right after claiming the ultimate prize (2010 WAM Song of The Year) and asked if it would be possible to work together. Hell yeah we would! Now it’s not very often someone with a voice like that would ask such a thing, so we made sure we waited until the right moment to make the most of the opportunity.
A month or so later, Rae (Speek Easy) sent us a beat he wanted us to collaborate on for his debut album “Fluke”. The beat was straight out fire. How could someone who has been making beats for such a short period of time be producing gems like this?! A heavy synth that growled underneath some bouncy drums was the driving force of the beats ability to make your insides move. Images of someone listening to it, eyes closed, facing the sky were flashing through our minds. So we really wanted to capture this sense of freedom in the topic. We started writing verses and all was going well until we got to the chorus… We played with the idea of Georgi writing a hook but were pretty unsure as it seemed well out of her comfort zone. We threw caution to the wind and sent the beat to her with a verse on it. Her enthusiasm was actually a little suprising and the following week she came round to our home studio (The Stoop) to record.
Recording Georgi for this track is something I will never forget. She stepped into the booth without us having heard/read any of her lyrics. When the combination of her vocals and this beat rang through my headphones for the first time I experienced an exhilarating chill. The feel that was created was exactly what was needed.
So here we are today, single about to be released at The Rosemount on June 22nd, 40,000 hits on YouTube and a new video clip currently being edited by Cut & Paste DVD. All because of a series of random events that lead to a combination of sounds that all meshed perfectly. You could even say the whole thing was a “Fluke”.
The launch will be brought to you by a set from each entity; Speek Easy, The Stoops, Georgi Kay and special guests That Velvet Echo.

Interview with Coin from "The Stoops".

Hey all. I know most of you guys have heard of The Stoops by now and I can tell by the amount of traffic they have brought to this blog. I have a few Q&A's with Coin so check it out below.

How did you guys come about as a group?
Pronto and Roc went to the same school and started a group called rhymes in effect with SydeFX.
While I (Coin) was in two groups, TWO TONE - with Hire & DJ COMPLEX, and FLYLEAF with Mei Swan. After I left both groups, I met Roc through a friend at Tafe, and we started working on music together. Before we knew it, 'the stoopid fresh crew' was born. we recorded a lot of demo songs, playing with music while focusing on our education and careers. a few years later, we dropped 'id' and 'crew' and released the self titled STOOP FRESH E.P. with the man Taku on most of the beats, and Mei Swan joining the group.

Meanwhile, Bonita was working with 'the typhoons', sucesfully gigging all around perth, and playing big festivals. In early 2010 after I (coin) returned from a long stint of living in Japan, Mei Swan departed from the group, and we were in search of someone to fill her shoes, a very difficult spot to fill. The Typhoons had broken up, and Bonita, one of our biggest fans, was free. So it was all perfect timing in the end. Then JSQUARED, who we have worked with previously on the STOOP NES LP, offered to do a collaborative album with us. We worked on the album for roughly under a year, became 'The Stoops' and released the collaborative album 'STOOPSQUARED' for free at www.thestoops.bandcamp.com.

What inspired your style?
It is hard to cover this as we have so many members in the group, but as a group, I would have to say our biggest influences would be ATCQ, De La Soul, Hocus Pocus and Slum Village.

How has the success of the track free been for you guys?
It just goes to show that music is just as much a business as it is an art, unfortunately. The sucess off the song is 80% attributed to it being used in a TV commercial, 20% to it being a good song. I think that is the case with most popular songs. But with that said, it has been great, and has opened us up to a wider audience, who may not really listen to hip hop, but enjoy good music. Its nice to turn on the tv/radio and hear your music being played on a regular basis.

What was it like working on your album stoopsquared?
It was a great experience, JSQUARED pretty much provided us with a bunch of beats, we picked our favourites, decided on concepts and themes as a group. We then split to write our parts. We would then get together once a week to show what we have come up, criticise and build on what we had. That is one of the benefits of working in a group, you can filter out all the trash to ensure there is a higher quality product in the end. It was great to involve all our favourite Perth artists in the album including Rae, The Empty Cup, Mathas, Ol Wright, Tim Crick and Delirious.

Do you have any upcoming shows around perth?
Yes sir!
We have:
27th of May - KURTIS BLOW at the Bakery.
Kurtis Blow was a huge inspiration growing up before I hit my teens, and it will be an amazing honour to play on the same stage as one of the forefathers of Hip Hop. The Stoops have joined forces with a local soul band, 'accumulated gestures' and we will be playing together for the first time at this gig. I am not one to talk up my own music, but it is sounding AMAZING!!

28th and 29th - We are supporting Illy.

4th of June - We will be playing the Malt Market in Dunsborough. We played this venue over the Easter Break, and the people there are amazing. Everyone is down to have a good time, and as long its good music, they welcome you open armed.

What projects are you working on in the short future?
Bonita - Is working on an album with local female mc 'Hyclass' It should be dropping in the next few months.

Coin - Working on another solo release with a producer from the east coast.
We have a lot of cool features and styles on this, and should be ready for release by the end of the year.

The Stoops - currently working on:

STOOP GESTURES - a collab album with the accumulated gestures. A very organic soulful synth album.
STOOPSQUARED2 (Name Tentative) - This will be a completely different to the first one. Cant really explain it in words, so I guess you will have to wait haha...

Are you doing a video for any of your tracks?
Yes, we are in the planning stages for a video for FREE which will be released on June the 22nd,
and possibly one for Paperplanes.

Any plans to take your music national or on the international scene?
In terms of tours, Outside of music, Pronto and I are focused on our professional careers, and therefore are unable to commit to tours outside of Perth. We did try and organise a tour to Melbourne , but with all the clashing plans, we laid that idea to rest.

In regards to the international scene, its funny, we have had more love in Japan and Europe than in Australia for StoopSquared. Most of our listens, downloads come from France, Germany, and Japan. We have had offers to to play shows there, but unfortunately it just conflicts with our day to day lives.

Lastly, Thank you to anyone that has listened to our music and supported us at our shows.
In a small place like Perth, the supportive community we have really mean a lot to us.

Make sure you check out The Stoops on Facebook.
