Hey all, check out this interview I have with Mr Grevis. For those who haven't heard of him he is an upcoming Perth MC that has come out with some impressive tracks so far. He is working on a FREE release for you all soon titled 'The Sampler'.

So where do you get the name Mr Grevis from?
Funny u should ask... I'm in the works of making a 2 minute youtube vid explaining this! haha its not a name! its an expression i made up, the video will explain it better

You are working on an album, what is it called?
I'm working on 2 albums one of which is fully recorded and in the cuts/mixing/mastering stage now i decided to release a 10 track free album first then a full length later.

When can we expect to hear it?
The short album hopefully by april but defiantly may 25th at the very latest. The second album i already have 6 tracks written for and 3 new beats so hopefully december for that one... i have saved my good tracks for that album so hopefully people like the first album cos then they should defiantly dig the second one!

Who is involved in production for the album?
The short album, dazastah, rob shaker and paulie p. Similar for the second album but i have old beats from trials that I've written too and 3 brand new trials beats that I've half written tracks too! There probably 5 of my favourite songs I've done, and i don't say that all that often about my own music cos I'm mega self critical!

Who are you main influences when it comes to Hip Hop?
I would have to say naughty by nature cos its the first tape i ever bought and i knew something changed when i bought that tape! Still love that album! Fucken love guilty simpson he sounds so basic cos his flow just rolls but he is really intricate at the same time spits multis and u hardly notice cos he just rolls on the beat. Brother ali, eminem. As far as ozzy hip hop goes hilltops, drapht, horrowshow funk oars vents downside and i reckon pez is a fucken sick emcee too.... Not really a massive fan of staunch hip hop about shanking ppl etc, i been in alot of strife with the law over my life but i don't wanna put out a negative image and try come across like i think I'm a tough guy! I like to spit about life, relevant issues and send a positive message and make music that i myself would actually wanna hear!

What do you think of the scene in Perth?
Perth scene is fucken sick, mostly not alot of beef and everyone helps each other out etc i think we got a really good community of people that all stick together and unite in times of crisis and need.

Who are some locals we should watch out for?
I think bitter has had that underground crown locked down for quite some time now... very hardworking emcee! it shows in his tunes. My favourite emcee would be complete, dude is crazy talented if only he would just stop rapping about raping small children haha. Soma is fucken dope its like having a sick UK rapper right here in perth! Dsc boys go hard too.... There is a few young emcees and crews who I'm not massively feeling but out of the young guns i would have to say i really like what I'm hearing from Dista theres still a bit of room for improvement but that said i already dig his music and i like the direction he is going with it!

Do you have any shows coming up?
Yes i do... its bitter b's mix tape launch/birthday party at rose mount on may 25th! Headlined by seth sentry. Me and porsah laine are on the support! I will be giving away free copy of my album on the night to anyone who wants one!

Australian Hip Hop Supports CanTeen

Perth rapper Hunter loses cancer battle

PERTH rapper Hunter lost his two-year battle with cancer this morning.

Tributes have poured in on Twitter for Robert Hunter, one of the founding members of Australia's rap and hip hop community.

He emerged in the 1990s as a battle MC and went on to release four albums. He had been working on a final project, an album in support of cancer charity CanTeen.

Hunter was a member of the Syllabolix Crew, which ARIA-nominee Drapht is also a part of. Drapht tweeted this morning," On behalf of SBX, we regret to inform you all we lost a brother this morning. @HunterSBX, we love you & we're glad you're no longer in pain."

The Hilltop Hoods tweeted: "Rest in Peace @HunterSBX. We love you brother. My heart is broken."

Hunter was active on his Twitter account as recently as Tuesday, when he tweeted, "There will be no pearls of wisdom today or tommorow. They are gathering my next if kin." (sic)

He is survived by a son, Marley.

Since his diagnosis a film crew had been following all aspects of his life. Below is a teaser for the documentary:

Bitter Belief - Isolation (Review)

Hey all, finally got around to finishing the review for Isolation. I didn't really keep any structure with the review but just wrote as I was listening to the album. A lot of peepz probably won't agree with my taste in music and I didn't try to write from anybody else's perspective. Mad props to Bitter B on one of the best releases I have heard out of Perth to date.

Bitter Belief – Isolation

I received Bitter Belief's new album “Isolation” a couple of weeks ago now. When I opened the parcel I was impressed with the art work. The drawing and simple design was a perfect match for the title. The first thing I do when I get any album is check the credits so I opened it up to see production credits from Optamus, Creed Birch, John Barrett, Dazastah and Rob Shaker.

The first track I heard was Introduction, this track left a little to be desired. It is a piano loop with Bitter B saying his name and what seems to be a random Nas sample. I let this play out and it was only for about a minute so it wasn't too bad. After the intro I was a little sceptical to what I was about to hear but an awesome string loop came in and built into Bitter flowing over some marching band style snares. This beat hits hard and the lyrics are on point. Bitter's style fits perfectly over this style of music and my head was nodding like a bobble head. I was glad to hear this track as it got me really excited to hear the rest of what was to come. I wasn't sure what to expect afterwards and then I heard that phat brass loop and some hard knocking drums. I thought Who You Came To See was dope but Move Back gave me stank face so bad it wasn't funny. The Rap references were awesome and I felt it was a similar selection to what I had grown up with. For some reason the only problem after this track was the silence for about 20 seconds after the track stopped. Burning Embers was next with a familiar sound and a female voice sampled. The sample used had the signature choppy FL Slicer sound (not sure what was used but it gave me a smile to hear). I felt this track dragged a little but not because it wasn't good it just isn't my type of song. Letter To Melody was up next and once again it was dope but not exactly my style, this song feels like it would go off at a festival or live show. In Your Mouth is an interesting track that we can probably all relate to, together with a head nodding beat and a sick flow probably one of the top tracks on the album. Dance With The Devil is another good track with a 90's Mobb Deep feeling beat but the only thing that put me off was the huge reverb on the chorus vocals. The Peoples Champ was another that while good wasn't really something I could get into, it could work as an introduction for a UFC fighter or something. Party In Perth has a build up into a nice smooth flow with big ups to Perth. Porsah Laine features on the hook and Dazastah on the beat. Lost Soul is more up tempo with Bitter B giving us a chance to get to know a little bit about his personality. Memory Lane sees Bitter B get into stories of his past and you can't help but to sympathise with him. When I heard The Bounce I nearly choked on my drink, this is probably the dopest Perth Hip Hop track I have ever heard. The beat is exactly what I love to hear in Hip Hop and the flow is on point. Bitter raps about his Hip Hop background and lists some artists that he is influenced by. Chemical Love was another decent track with an awesome hook and featuring Optamus and Moondog J. The Storm is a track that I was really feeling when I heard it, Bitter tells stories about people and their struggles. The way he raps really draws the listener in and you can really relate to what it is about. Diggin Deep has a very familiar sound to an old Pac song I've heard but is good to vibe to, not too full on and good to bump your head to. Who Would Want Me Dead? Was up next and features Perth legends Dazastah & Drapht. The beat sounds like an old James Bond sample and everybody on the track kills it. Pure Evil is a track I couldn't really get into because I had heard the sample about a million times but the track content is pretty good. Own Worst Enemy comes in last and for some reason I didn't really like it, I think it felt a little too Rocky for me. I probably would have put it in earlier and ended it up with Pure Evil but overall it is still a decent track.

Anyway without me ranting about the tracks any more I just have to say that after listening to Isolation a few times it really grew on me. Although I was a little harsh on some of the tracks overall the album is excellent and one of the best releases I have heard out of Perth. I am looking forward to seeing Bitter B perform live soon and for more future releases. Grading the album I give it 9/10 so make sure you grab a copy today.
