M'da V Beats Interview

Hey all, it is almost the end of the Producer Appreciation Month and I'd like to say thanks to everybody that has contributed. We have some good interviews from a lot of Perth's best talent and there is also plenty I found out about but never got a chance to interview. To all the Producers out there, your work hasn't gone unnoticed and I am comfortable in saying that we have some of the best beat makers in the world right here.

M'da V Beats Interview

When did you start and what got you into making beats?
I started making beats about 10 yrs to 12 yrs ago back home in Tanzania (which is where im from) i use to beatbox on the sound recorder on the pc we had a lil computer mic..i would sequence them too...then wen i moved to my second home Zambia thats wen i learned about softwares and got into a few studios...but i cant say thers really like a particular reason why i got into making beats because ive always had that rythm..n none of family is into making music lol....but i knew what i wanted my beats to sound like when i got introduce to old soulful music 90s 80s 60s 70s 60 n beyond of bands u've never heard of lol ..but thats wen i really decided this is wat i wanna do for the rest of my life

Kanye, just blaze, the runners,9th wonder and offcourse DILLA ,...kanye and just really influence the type of sample selection ,the runners, i guess wen i make a dirty south i wud it sound like that or even better and 9th wonder has simplicity and DILLA jus makes a sample sound so crisp and the snares cut at the rite time ...so yeah all these artists influence my style in a big way i learn by listening to their beats

Rob Shaker Interview

How does it feel to make the final of Perth's recent beat battle "Beat Down 3"?
feels dope! although i made the final in bd2 and lost to the man taku, and lost in the final four of the first one so i was really hoping to go one better this time.

Who are some other beat makers in Perth to watch out for?
im a big fan of taku, raiz, alphanumeric, paulie p, wisdom tooth and creed birch.

Do you think there will be more interest in the beat making aspect of hip hop since the battles?
im hopin so.. in my mind production is the 5th element of hip hop. of course it relates to turntablism, but its taking a back seat to it and to mcing. dont get me wrong i love a good rhyme, but for me the beat makes up a huge part of the track. more shows and releases relating to hip hop production can only help! big ups to rae, sam and everyone else involved with the beat downs!

Who do you think will take out the next Beat Down?
ME!!!! apparently taku has been forced into retirement which sucks.. but my favs from this year would be alphanumeric, raiz and creed.

When did you start and what got you into making beats?
i started making beats in 2001. i inherited some turntables and a mixer around then, and got a jacked copy of fruity loops at about the same time. that always helped me: learning turntablism and beat making at the same time. i would make a beat, and then do some cuts over it to test the phatness.. back then AMC, Grims and i were in a crew called Full Proof.. Reprazent!

What are your musical influences and how do they effect your style?
im influenced by the usual hip hop greats, but i make largely mid 90's boom bap. i always try to put my own twist on it, but i love the phat heavy syncopated drums. in regards to other music ive developed a taste for all kinds as a result of sitting in the studio and listening to records to sample. i love dark orchestral music - i think i own the whole naxos collection. and im a huge fan of latin music, jazz, blues and soul. i know i havent actually listed any artists, but id seriously be here all night if i started coz i wouldnt wanna leave anyone out..

If you could choose 10 rappers to produce for who would they be?
nas, vinnie paz, method man, jehst, trem, guru, delta, rakim, eminem, and pharoe monch.

What projects have you worked on so far?
Western Supremacy 2004
Wolverine - The Mxtape 2004
Figures of Speech - Roll of the Dice 2005
Wolverine - The Wait is Over 2005
Yt - A Tribute 2006
Wolverine - The Mystro Mixtape 2007
Slackjaw - Eat A Rat 3 2008 (Cuts only)
Wolverine - The Summer Time Vibe 2009
Wolverine - Street Music 2010
Porsah Laine - Feel this 2010
Maundz - Mr Nobody 2010

What projects are you working on in future?
about to be released is "The Dragon Project" featuring MC's Tomahawk, Bitter Belief, Defyre and myself on production. It's got features by Porsah Laine, Mortar, Hunter and Dazastah. Its gonna be a huge one so make sure ya cop it! out before xmas - the perfect gift for ya mum!

another one not to miss will be Bitter Beliefs album - Isolation. Ive got 5 or so beats on that along with Daz and Opt on production its set to be epic!

also workin on the Goodfellas with AMC and Adam Crook, as well as Slackjaws album, Creed Birchs album timeless will be a monster too, and helpin out some others with beats including: Soma, DSC with Cortext and Aero D, Grevis, Phat Phlo, Obliqe, BYP and Defyre.

also workin on my own album with a bucket load of mc spots to fill so hit me up!

Who do you think is holding it down for Perth right now?
ive already probably name dropped everyone in perth, but id have to say the peeps who have always held down perth: SBX! there are heaps of dudes coming through now, a couple who ive mentioned but heaps others too!

What gear are you using to make beats?

quad core i7 PC with reason 4, adobe audition and heaps of other programs. i got 3 screens which is a bit excessive. yamaha 24 track mixer with garys avalon preamp and neumann mic, a rode ntk, a kawai baby grand piano, an akai mpd24, a yamaha dtxplorer electronic drum kit, 2 numark hdx digital turntables, a coupla vestax decks for cuts and sampling with a denon mixer, some truth monitors with a sub, but always adding and subtracting. you can peep photos of the studio if youre my mate on fb.

What are the top 5 beats ever made to you?

pharoe monch - simon says
a tribe called quest - luck of lucien
j5 - 5 jurass finish first
vinnie paz - end of days
vinnie paz - street wars

Where can we hear some of your work?
jb hifi got figures of speech and wolf albums, itunes for porsah album, and from me if you hit me up.

These guys are some of the dopest in Perth Hip Hop right now so if you haven't bought the album, make sure you get a copy. Hit up Chekid or Cortext on Facebook and I am sure they will hook you up. I will be doing a review (gotta check with them first) and hopefully putting up a couple of tracks for those skeptics that don't want to buy it yet.

Use to have enormous amounts of plugins but they all do the same thing... You just have to know how to use em... So now i use the stock cubase eq's verbs and dynamic comps and limiters... I use live bass and guitar now.. I use ua la610 channel strip with a rode ntk or akg c214 mic.. Depends on what i'm doing.. I also have arturia origin for all synth sounds... Aaah fuk... Admin Beats - Interview

Hey all, how are ya? I have an interview here from an interstater (South Australia) that managed to sneak in to the mix. His name is Admin Beats and he does production for Thorts and Kadyelle. He also has worked with some other artists from around the way but because he is such a good sport and has produced for Perth Hip Hop I will run the interview.

Admin Beats

When did you start and what got you into making beats?
I started making beats in 03', I got into making beats through a good friend of mine DL. (Mindfield, Headstrong Company, Decades) We were both collecting records for a few years and when we met he was making beats so he helped me out getting gear and programs.

What are your musical influences and how do they effect your style?
My main musical influences hip hop wise would be J- Dilla, Thes-One and Ant. (my fav producers) I have spent a lot of time listening to their music and seeing how they progress over the years and this helps me progress myself. Not just sticking to the same format and experimenting, even if people don't like it at first! I listen to so many genres of music its hard to have main musical influences.

If you could choose 10 rappers to produce for who would they be?
Slug
Sage Francis
Q-Tip
Double-K & Thes One
Siah & Yeshua
Mos- Def
Pharoahe Monch
Common

What projects have you worked on so far?
So far I have produced on the following releases:
Tomphonic- Ebb and Flow
Maintain- Here Comes Trouble, Bucket Full Of Boombox and X1
Dialect(ADL)- Sound Of Change and Rugged Uncut Project
Mc Vella - Better Late Than Never
I have done cuts and recorded vocals for a few other mc's also.

What projects are you working on in future?
The future is looking good for releases next year Thorts and Kadyelle have both asked me on board for their releases, which I'm stoked about.
A new release with Maintain is on its way including a 12" release.
I'm working on a 12" with Dialect (ADL) and Maundz (MELB).
Keno (QLD) just took a heap of beats for his next release.
My new group No Doz (Me and Mnops) is coming out with an EP next year. Plus a heap of other local artists.
I don't charge for beats so I'm getting a lot of stuff out there!

Who do you think is holding it down for Perth right now?
In Perth at the moment I think Thorts and Kadyelle are holding it down, along with Drapht and Downsyde. The whole of Australia is coming out with great hip hop music. Its a good feeling to be a part of this culture.

What gear are you using to make beats?
To make beats i use a MPC 2000, Alexsis drum machine, Dr Boss SP-202 and Logic 9 on a Mac to put it all together. Also a lot of records, I strictly sample for my beats!

What are the top 5 beats ever made to you?
My 5 favorite beats ever is a hard one but here I go:
J-Dillas- Let the dollar circulate (Steve Spacek)
Thes-Ones- San Fransisco Knights (P.U.T.S)
Ants - Scapegoat (Atmosphere)
Capital- D - 50 Years (All Natural)
Show & AG - Full Scale (Full Scale EP)
So hard.....

Where can we hear some of your work?
Most of my earlier stuff is all sold but my latest release with Maintain is available at
www.maintainxadmin.com
And to hear my new beats I upload for mc's check my soundcloud page

Spit Syndicate, The Tongue & Class A all up in this bitch!

The Wildside Tour is coming to a town near you (and also totally far away) next week, stopping to impress the impressionable at Rocket Room, Northbridge on Thursday November 11 and Mojo's, Fremantle on Friday November 12, before heading to the inconveniently distant town of Albany on Saturday November 13, playing at Studio 146.
So, I don't like cutting and pasting without saying "Hey, I'm cutting and pasting this information"... So, I'm cutting and pasting this information... FOR YOU!

Elefant Tracks are happy to announce The Wildside Tour, hitting your town in November. Longtime collaborators The Tongue & Spit Syndicate will re-unite for a national tour supported by Melbourne's Class A.
The Tongue comes fresh from the release of his acclaimed new album Alternative Energy. Already featured as Album Of The Week on 2SER & FBi with plenty of great reviews already flowing in. The Tongue’s renowned charisma and sharp wit will be on display once again where he will be joined by DJ Skoob (3x NSW DMC Champion) and Joyride in a show not to be missed. Spit Syndicate are running on a high after the release of their critically acclaimed second album Exile. This tour will cap off what’s been an incredible year for the Sydney duo. They’ve had hugely successful tours with Horrorshow, their own Starry Eyed Tour and have won supports for the likes of Cypress Hill. Don't miss this chance to catch two of the country's most electrifying hip hop crews in a rare double-headline tour.

Now, I'm going to use this opportunity to talk about CLASS A. This is for a few reasons. One, because she happens to be a friend of mine whose career I have followed closely since her first mixtape release in 2007, and two, because I will be performing with her for the W.A leg of the Wildside Tour. Class A has been rapping for about 12 years; I have some of her first tracks she recorded on cassette as a wee fifteen year old lass. A Geelong girl now residing in Melbourne, she has worked her butt off over the past 12 years to carve a name for herself in this industry, supporting many Australian and international artists of high esteem over the years and, subsequently, proving that females have a bright future in this industry (just in case you weren't certain). Recently she celebrated the release of her first "official" LP (though third in total, off the back of her independant release Class with Parker in 2008), distributed by Other Tongues, with massive support nationally, and has joined Spit Syndicate and The Tongue for her first national tour to launch her full-length LP, Me, Me, Me & Him: The Secret Life of a Receptionist. The first single from the album, "So Bad", was launched onto national airwaves a few months ago, and it's smooth, catchy, playful lyricism and tone earned her many new listeners. Produced by M-Phazes, and with a shiny new film clip to boot, "So Bad" received a decent amount of rotation on Triple J to precede of the release of her new LP. Class A has been voted "Best Female MC" in the ozhiphop.com awards two years running (awwwkward!), and her feminine cheekiness has created an entirely new niche in the scene- a place where it's perfectly OK to be a girl and a rapper (and a receptionist)... and everything in between. I will also be performing some new material from my new album out next year, The Tree That Kept Apart The Stars, so make it down early to catch Class A & Kadyelle (that's me...)

If you do get down to either Rocket Room, Mojo's or Studio 146, I know you will not leave disappointed. Nor should you leave empty-handed, what with so many solid new releases for sale at the venues!

I started making music about 10 years ago. i only dabbled in it to start and was more focused on djing. as i became a better dj and it took less effort i needed a new challenge so i turned to making my own productions..i started making hip hop beats about 4 years ago after meeting a mc on a boat party and hip asking me to make him some hip hop.

What are your musical influences and how do they effect your style?
I believe all producers bring somthing new to the table as long as they be them selves and not try to copy others. one of my biggest influences is paul van dyk, his prodution and djing skill are at pinnacle of whats possible. with hip hop of course was listening to all the big names but masta ace really stands out for me. he tells stories in his tracks and theres always emotion behind it. long hot summer is one of the greatest hip hop albums ever.

Ive moving back into electronica a little bit as i have an opportunity to move to europe to dj if all goes well. im in the process of remixing a paul van dyk track as well as a mauro picotto track..
im still running mixtape tuesdays at the newport in fremantle and hosting mc battles, in march im holding a hip hop dj battle and mid next year i want to start holding producer battles there also.

ME, perth underground ( loftee ) , trooth, byp, d- toure, black poet, jamahl, tera, xzakt, dialekt, and all the mc's heading over to SA to battle

The Freakz Of The Nature - Live Friday 5th of November

Hey all, come down this Friday to The Swan Basement to check out The Freakz Of The Nature as they promote their latest single "Thoughts In My Head".

Perth/Sydney based electro hip hoppers, The Freakz of The Nature, announce their brand new single, ‘Thoughts In My Head’ and the WA launch of the song.

As a special preview as to what to expect from their forthcoming album, ‘2000Zen’, The Freakz of The Nature will be launching the Thoughts In My Head single on Friday November 5th at Swan Basement in North Fremantle.

Last seen live supporting Arrested Development in their Perth show a couple of years back, this is an ultra rare gig that you don't want to miss. The Freakz are most known for their energetic live shows, and this live set will feature all new material from their new album.

Supporting The Freakz on the night will be a diverse lineup including Wisdom2th (The Anonymous), Paulie P, JR and The Pantheon Vanguard. $5 entry, doors open at 8pm, with the first act on at 8:10pm, so get there early.

To say it's been a long time coming would be an understatement. The Freakz of The Nature formed back in 1996 before Australian hip hop was in the mainstream. Featuring Optimystic as an MC and Krazie Kraze also as an MC but also providing production, they were joined by their 3rd member, Illuminousity in 2002. In 2004 they released their 6 track EP 'Artistic Integrity' featuring the single Futuristic Mystics which scored itself a place in the Triple J Unearthed WA final selection.

Many gigs and a couple of years later saw Optimystic and Illuminousity move to Sydney and the members focus on solo projects. In 2009 they started recording what would be surprisingly, their debut album '2000Zen'.

2000Zen see's Krazie Kraze step away from production and introduce two new producers. Perhaps what may be called a concept album, the album is split into two halves "2000" and "Zen".

The 2000 side has 5 tracks produced by Loftee, an up-tempo electro/dubstep/dance influenced slice of hip hop.

The Zen side has 5 songs produced by Max Taylor. This side being a more darker and down-tempo trip hop influenced side.

This equals the sort of album you should expect from The Freakz of The Nature, a massively diverse collection of songs, all while still maintaining it's roots in hip hop, with everything from a special feature by Speech from legendary US hip hop act Arrested Development in one song, to a paranoid opera vocal wailing away in the chorus and verses of another. There's of course a few party style jams amongst the mostly politically and conscious rap style verses that have been typical of The Freakz past.

SHROOMZone Big Smoke Interview

SHROOMZone - Big Smoke Interview

When did you start and what got you into making beats?
Well, It started when I began rhyming. I was real shit
and no cats wanted to throw a dog a bone so I had to produce
all my own beats.. so I really had no choice. It just so
happens over time I got known for my beats instead of my rhymes.
Im not %100 certain but I would say I have been producing for
a few years, Im not gonna front like im oldschool.. Ive been
doing music since I dropped out of school though, so I had a
basic knowledge and kinda just took it from there.

What are your musical influences and how do they effect your style?
Well I played the drums for like 6 years or some shit so when it
comes to my beats Im all about PHAT drums, thats why I love boom bap so much. I hate homo synths and weak snares, does nothing for me at all. Depends on my mood aswell, sometimes I wake up and make some choppy premo shit, or ill just cut a break add a 4 bar sample and come up with some Wu shit, fuck I even do polished styles, pretty much anything.. I would say that my main influence is the budddssssss. but im better known for heavy raw boom bap.

If you could choose 10 rappers to produce for who would they be?
Uh the original wu tang emcees, jehst and
both possessed and psyklone from Rhyme asylym..
that makes 10 doesn't it?

What projects have you worked on so far?
I've done ALL of my own beats, as arrogant as that is.
Worked on a couple of beats for Frenzy's solo tip, I made
Broken English's Intro and a few beats for their new CD,
Worked on some shit for Azmatik whos coming along dope styles.
Been making beats for santos, JR, baxter and PM.. Did a pretty
epic beat for Bentman wich featured Lord Willin from the states
wich led to me making a beat for Willin and Apathy wich im
still waiting to hear back on.. theres too many to list, at some
stage most peeps have either asked for beats or shown interest in
coming down to the MUSHRoom "OH! dope pun" to have a gander.

What projects are you working on in future?

Im unsure so far but I can tell you that it will be dope. OH!
Nah... Im throwing feelers out so we will see what happens.
might make some beats for faggot bruce or LAz d..

Who do you think is holding it down for Perth right now?
Fuck I dunno, SHROOMZONE? OHHH!!!!! Nah I wouldnt have a clue,
Theres alot of dope cats around and theres alot of differant
styles of beats to be made, so I dont think anyone holds it down
in all areas.

What gear are you using to make beats?
I use FL studio like pretty much every other poor cunt making beats
these days, but I have a HUGE arsenal of VST's/VSTI's and killer samples and I find that when it comes to fruity's if youve got some mad shit and have a creative mind you can be a weapon. Ive got an Maudio oxygen 8 midi controller, korg nanopad and recently "thanks to el Loftwah" have been toying with the roland mv8000 wich has churned out some tasty beats for me to date.

What are the top 5 beats ever made to you?
Top 5 beats? shitttt.... High plains anthem by jehst, Im pretty sure
that he made it himself. Kick in the door by premo "love the screaming jay sample",
Uhhh...clan out tha front produced by RZA, Broken Window wich I think is produced by Engineer
and hrmm.. Pump pump from snoop doggs doggy style "unsure who produced it, probably dre"
what a hard question to answer though... Theres so many fat beats, these are just beats
I had bumping today so theyre in my head.

Where can we hear some of your work?
Check out my page www.shroomzone.tk or www.shroomztv.tk and keep your ears out
at shows for the SHROOMZONE CUNTS tag...OH!!!!

Producer Appreciation Month

Hey all, well it is the start of November which means 2 things. I am running a month that I am calling "Producer/Beat Maker Appreciation Month". I will be interviewing as many Producers or Beat Makers (whatever you like to call yourselves) and find out what is around the Perth scene. This is because of an event coming up that unfortunately I won't be able to attend (or compete in). If you would like to be a part of this make sure you get in contact with me via email on loftee@perthunderground.com.au or lofteebeats@gmail.com. The second part for the month is that I am trying to grow a killer tash (YEWWWW!).
