THEGNTLMN - Interview

How has the response been to your recent releases?

Its been interesting. I've never released anything on my own so its been a real learning experience. Everybody that’s copped the tapes has come back with positive feedback though so I gather Listeners are understanding what I'm doing and feeling the new direction I've decided to take.

Most people know who you are by now, but why the alias?

I got tired of being the type of producer that makes beats, puts them on the net with a price tag, sells, and repeats process. I’m not about selling my beats to some toys for a quick buck, I mean, I respect a dude that can live off his music but I'm not in that head space anymore.

These days I'm all about trying new things and growing as a producer, I want to make music that contributes to my own catalog rather than everyone elses and even though choosing to use an alias has definitely made it tricky for listeners that followed me previously to continue to do so, I feel that I've made the right decision.

What have you been working on recently?

I've been busy working on the first installment from a new series of tapes titled 'Cypher Sessions' that should be out for free download within the next month or two. I have also started putting together joints for the next Earbuds release. I'm really taking my time with it though, I want to make sure I don’t rush it and fuck the vibe up.

Who are you favorite artists in Perth?

Keep an ear out for Oath's – The Sun sets in the west LP and Kid Tsunami's The Chase LP. Both solid artists making real music!

Who are your favorite artists in general?

Shit, Hard question. Lately I've been getting into a lot of lesser known artists, I prefer listening to cats working out of home studios rather than the more established guys.

I can relate more to artists like Onoe Caponoe, Cracker Jon, Ollie Sudds or the Shedmen for example.... dudes making quality music for the love with limited funds!

Favorite producers?

Rather than list off all the classics that everybody does, Ill take this opportunity to shine some light on some real dope underground producers that I've been keeping an ear on lately. I urge peeps to check out StarvmentZ, Jenova7, Illuzual, Hashfinger, Son of a bricklayer, Jae Genius, 2latethadon etc... these are all extremely talented mad cunts that people need to know about.

What equipment do you use for beats?

A piece of hose, Rigged up to a Gatorade bottle Rigged up to my mouth, Rigged up to my brain.

What is your inspiration to make music?

I'm not really sure anymore, I'm just sorta doing what I'm doing and enjoying the process. I used to care about status and what people thought but these days I couldn't give a fuck. I'm just doing me and I feel my music has finally become a reflection of this.

Is there anybody you would like to work with in future?

Definitely, moves are currently being made to make it happen!

Any upcoming shows or releases?

Im not planning on doing any shows of my own any time soon, but be sure to peep out the homies Slackjaw and KnoeFM supporting Jehst, June 30th at the Civic Hotel. Shits gonna be ill.

Release wise, Keep peeping my bookface and bandcamp pages for updates.

Where can we find your music?

Hopefully within any mad cunts music collection!! Otherwise peep www.thegntlmn.com / www.facebook.com/thegntlmn

Tera AKA Big Wil - Interview

Wat up? I got the chance to get a quick interview with Perth Hip Hop up-comer Tera AKA Big Wil. Although there is plenty of extremely talented people in the indigenous hip hop scene here at Perth Underground we believe that Tera should be nominated for a Deadly Award.

When did you first get into making hip hop music?
I can honestly say that i have only started getting into" making" hiphop music in the past 3-4 years. It was almost like a calling or a progression into something i feel i was meant to do because hiphop has been a big part of my life growing up and not just the musical side of hiphop im talking break dancing/graffitti and rhyming so a couple of years back when I saw that abmusic had a hiphop programme running as part of there studies i enrolled and after writng poetry and just straight rhymes for many years combined with a love for hiphop/rap music from the time i was about 10 years old i decided to give it a go and start to learn about all aspects of not only hiphop/rap music but all music. THen while at abmusic my cousin seeko mc and jamahl ryder and my self formed a little rap crew called OBSTRUKT and i also met fellow indigenous rapper BRYTE MC and he actually gave us the very first beat i ever rapped over and recorded to so big ups to bryte!. I also met BLACK POET while studying at abmusic and he introduced me to Andrew Wright from GOLD DUST STUDIOS and i started recording and co producing beats there. I still know very little about producing and mixing and mastering and all that good stuff but it's something i want to pursue further but for now i like just writing and getting in the studio and doing my thing and leaving the rest up to the engineers and producer although i love being apart of it especially the beat production side of things i love that.....

Who or what are your influences when it comes to music?
Some of the who's and what's that influence me when it comes to music are my children, family ,friends and even people that i don't really get along with influence me!i would have to say me i influence my music and i suppose life in general you know the ups and downs we face on our journey and the good times and bad times and even other peoples struggles and stories are very influencial to me and my music. Also there are way to many musicians to name who musically influence me but really just those artists who use there music to help others and bring positive messages and try to encourage change to our world.

What do you think of the Perth hip hop scene?
Well i havn't been in the scene for to long but from what i have seen everyone is pretty close and supports each other and i suppose that's all you could ask for.I am greatfull to the perth hiphop scene for the oppurtunities that have been offered to me as an indigenous artist.from the chance to perform and just general support from other mc's and producers and promoters. One thing i can say is that perth is full of talented hiphop artists/mc's and producers .The quality of what is coming out of perth is unbelievable and the wider australian hiphop scene should keep an eye and ear out for whats coming out of perth...

Who are your favourite hip hop artists?
Some of my favourite indigenous and oz hiphop artists are last kinnection , wire mc ,brotha black, hill top hoods, briggs , sky high, draft, daz and layla, and one of my all time favourite perth hiphop artists/crew are clandestine( i was lucky enough to help open up a show for them) also..bryte mc,FLUENT(my little cuzzin who is up and coming and tearing up every stage and every mic he spits on)..also funkoars,mr grevis...impossible odds and many many more...some of my all time favourites outside of oz would have to be the usuall suspcts being 2pac.biggie.ice cube.snoop, public enemy, run dmc, beastie boys, wutang big l,big pun and so son ...too many to name but you get the picture!

What are your thoughts on the aboriginal hip hop scene?
Well the aboriginal/indigenous hiphop scene continues to amaze me at the amount of talent that is in our country/communities its just madness there are so many talented artists all doing there thing and getting positive messages out there and really using there music to help our people and shed light on our struggle.it makes me proud to be an indigenous mc when i look at what is going on amongst our people knowing that we all love doing what we do but we are all still into our culture and are all trying to make positive change with our music while showing the rest of the country our culture, stories and dances. I know i love being involved with able to perform at survival day concerts and naidoc events and rally's and any event to do with our people its just awsome and even when im not performing i am always in the crowd with my kids to show my support and ive noticed that aboriginal hiphop is coming strong out of our capital cities aswell as from desert regions and remote communities aswell which is 2 deadly!

Have you been involved in the Deadly Awards before?
No i have never been involved in the Deadly awards so this would be the first time being nominated So a big thank you to you perth underground for the nomination and 2 everybody else that has nominated me thank you to. I have watched and followed previous deadly's and always thought it would be deadly to be apart of just seeing all my people being aknowledged for their hard work and deadly achievements it's very inspiring to me and no doubt to the rest of my people.iI hope i can be succesfull with the nominations and make it thru to the voting round then i wil be hitting everyone i know to vote for me. I am being nomnated in the category of most promising new talent to music so hopefully all goes well . Ihave no doubt there are alot of talented musicians nominated and it is going to be hard to crack into a final spot of nominees but you gota be in it to win it so lets do this!

Are you working on any projects at the moment?
Yeh definately working on a few projects at the moment currntly i am workin on finishing up my first solo e.p which should be ready by the end of this year.It features some of w.a 's most talented indigenous artists aswell as the art work on the cover being done by graphic novelist and cousin of mine the one and only brenton mckenna the main man behind the graphic novel UBBY'S UNDERDOGS. another such project is a film clip for one of my songs BETTA DAYZ which is being played thru out australia at the moment on just about every indigenous radio station aswell as being picked up by triple j and being aired on there unearthed digital station aswell. The people helping me with filming and production and planning of the film clip actually are documentary film makers and they have picked up another one of my songs titled BEEF WITH ME and they are using it in a documentary about wild will tomlinson australias own IBO super feather weight WORLD CHAMPION and his time at his training camp in perth and his time leading up to his world title bout which he obviously won so it is pretty cool that documentary film maker simon holland and shadow empire entertainment not only are using one of my songs but are now doing my film clip for BETTA DAYS aswell.i am also constantly guiding, mentoring and managing my little cousin FLUENT who is one of the most talented young indigenous mc's to come out of perth and everyone should be keeping an ear and eye out for this young man. I also recently laid some vocals on a track for dardy azz productions which is run by azriel bartlett the youngest of the mighty bartlett brothers (indigenous band) and the hook was layed down by jason bartlett(bartlett brothers band member) a former australian idol hopeful.last of all i am currently workin on something different which is a collaboration of musicians that all attended scarborough high school and some of us where even in the same classes but we all represent different genres of music so that should be pretty interesting. i have also recently been contacted by worldwidetrackpros.com and they are asking if i need new beats and they let me know they are currently working on some trax for def jam so that sounds promising to.There is lots more planned so keep an ear and eye out for ya boy TERA aka BIG WIL.

Where can we hear some of your music?
If you tune into triple j unearthed's digital radio station you can hear betta dayz being played also noongah radio 100.9 fm plays betta dayz and also the indij hip show broadcast nationaly out of redfern is playing betta dayz and another track of mine and fluents called old skool new. when the documentary from shadow empire is released make sure you go buy a copy and listen out for my song beef with me.other wise you can get on to my triple j unearthed page http://www.triplejunearthed.com/Artists/View.aspx?artistid=51107 and listen to a couple of trax aswell as facebook on my artist page or reverbnation i have 3-4 songs posted on there https://www.reverbnation.com/teraakabigwil# but keep an eye and ear out for my e.p and the betta dayz film clip which will be released properly towards the end of year..
