DSC (Down South Crew) have been performing across the state for 6 years, but even with a prolific work rate and solid internet following, are yet to put out an official CD as a group. Finally the duo is ready to fire a warning shot to the other states and any other would-be lyricists with "Ill Recognise Ill - The Collab Mixtape Volume 1".
We've chopped it up with the crew's Aero.D to get the word on the tape that has the biggest array of Perth MC's on a single collection, ever...
"To get straight to the point, what IS "IRI?"
Aero.D - it's a DSC collab mixtape. Your going to hear me and Cortext together on pretty much every track, but almost every track also has at least one feature. Basically we started the tape as a way to network and work with other artists in Perth, being from down south originally. But as well as that we wanted to prove to everyone, and ourselves, that we could match it with anyone in the city. It's a REAL mixtape. There's jacked beats as well as originals, and the entire thing is blended by Mr Rob Shaker. "Ill Recognise Ill' itself means acknowledging the skills of the rest of the scene, it's a real Perth thing and it was always intended on bringing everyone together aswell as a bit of friendly competition.
"So you've worked with a few people for this one, want to let us in on a few features before the tracklist goes up?"
A - theres 30 MC's, 2 DJ's, so yeah, just a couple. As far as production we've got the homie Creed Birch on a couple of bangers, MX Axis (SMA), Rights (DS Family), Sickadash (Transperth) and Leonidas playing a bit of live MPC on there. MC wise the features include Bitter Belief, Creed, Complete, Leonidas, Smiley, BYP, Soma, Aftershock, Rights & Paradox and nate Deezy from our crew DS Family and the big homie Chekid from the Sound Magnetiks fam... obviously it's only one CD, we couldn't get EVERYONE we wanted to work with on it... but it is only Volume 1.
"Where did you guys record the majority of the tape?"
A - With Chekid at his Phat Rich studio, as well as the track "Escape from the Burdcage" at Linburd's Burdcage studio. We did a whole bunch of recording at my own home studio last year as well, draft stuff that we mainly re-recorded. HUGE shoutouts to Chekid, he's off travelling the world now, but he put just as much if not more work than us into this one haha.
"Is there going to be a launch?"
A - Definately. We haven't set dates yet as we want the tracks to circulate around a bit before we do them all live, especially with so many people involved, but with so many features we've decided on doing a Northside and Southside launch so we can get everyone up, and get everyone's crews down to the shows whether their from north or south of the river.
"What's next for DSC?"
A - we're about 3 quarters of the way through writing our debut album which is entirely produced by the man Raiz. He approached us about doing an album and we were feeling his beats before we knew he was into our stuff aswell, so we jumped at the chance to work with him on an entire project. The album is going to be recorded at Dazastah's Lair with the legendary Daz, who's also going to work on all of the beats with Raiz. So I feel pretty fortunate and I know the finished product is going to be a monster, you should hear what we've got already...
"Finally, where can we get a copy of IRI?"
A - it's not QUITE out yet, keep checking out our Facebook page (Down South Crew) for updates but it will be out in the next month. It's not an official release, hence not having a release date and it won't be in stores, but you can get it from us at show's, on the street or hit us up via the DS Facebook page or either of our personal ones... No stalkers.
